On March 12, 1912, the Girl Guides were founded in Savannah, Georgia, by 51-year-old Juliette Gordon Low, who was inspired by a meeting with Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts.
Later known as the Girl Scouts, Juliette’s first group grew quickly and the idea of an organization for spirited and curious girls found many fans.
It was only five years later, in 1917, that the girls began selling cookies to finance their adventures. In those early days, the cookies were homemade. The Thin Mint didn’t make its appearance until 1939.
