On this day in history, one of the most successful singing artists of all time was born in Detroit: Diane Earnestine Earle Ross.
You know her history: she started out singing as a teenager with her friends, hanging out in the Motown offices. Along with her friends Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard, she broke out in the group The Supremes in 1961 with their first hit Where Did Our Love Go?
She left the group for a solo career in 1969 and also starred in such movies as the Billie Holiday biopic Lady Sings the Blues. This year, in honor of the diamond anniversary of her birth, special screenings that include her famous 1983 Central Park concert in New York, will be held in 700 theaters Wednesday and Thursday.
