On March 4, 1966, at the height of Beatlemania, the London Evening Standard published an interview with John Lennon in which he observed “We’re (the Beatles) more popular than Jesus now.”
He went on to add: “I don’t know which will go first, rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity.”
There was no uproar over his comments until later in the year when a U.S. teen magazine republished them. A Southern radio DJ took umbrage, spread the word, and soon other radio stations were boycotting Beatles songs, urging listeners to bring their Fab Four memorabilia to burn in “Beatles Bonfires.”
It was a hard day’s night.
